Chapter Fifteen: A Bridge over Troubled Waters

Most of my morning I’d been working, disturbed only by the strange looks I’d been getting from Qi. I attempted to ignore them for the duration of the hours we were working together, but by the time lunch was rolling around, it was officially starting to piss me off. I gave him a couple of harsh glares, hoping that he'd come out with the information on his own, or just stop looking at me oddly. He’d look away initially but within ten or twenty minutes, he’d be back to looking at me with a raised eyebrow and pursed lips.

“What the fuck?” I barked finally. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Qi crossed his arms, and I couldn’t tell if I was happy or irritated with the fact that he seemed to be developing a callus for my traditional bad attitude, knowing it was nothing compared to when I was legitimately angry. “I was going to ask you the same thing.”

“I’m not looking at you strangely,” I said.

“No, but you have something weird going on.” He looked at the high stack of work we’d already completed for the morning. “We’ve done twice as much work today as we would have normally done by this point.”

“Are you suggesting I should do less work?”

“No.” He tilted his head to the side. “But something’s different about you. You were so angry when you left here yesterday that I expected you to be in a worse mood this morning.”

“Are you accusing me of something?” I asked.

“It’s not my place to question you.”

Once again, that answer was one I was ultimately pleased with, but I would have far preferred for him to just tell me what he was thinking. “Let’s say for today it is your place.”

“I’m not about to have you blow my head off because I say something that pisses you off for real,” Qi spat back. “I’ll just stop looking at you.”

I slammed my hand on my desk. “This is already about to piss me off for real.” I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. “This new partnership is only going to work if we can be honest with one another. I know I can be…harsh, but I promise to hear your words with an open mind and consideration for your hesitation.”

“Really?” Qi raised his eyebrow. “That’s an invitation to fight back if you flip out.”

“Fine. Fight back all you want,” I said.

“You seem happy.” The words came out of Qi’s mouth so quickly that I barely heard them. He looked back at me, attempting to read my face, and his hand was already halfway to his waist like he knew I was going to snap. Did I really have such a poor reputation that he was afraid I’d react harshly to being told that?

“Happy?”

“You’re energetic, and you don’t seem so dark. It’s been much easier to work this morning. Less tense. We’ve gotten so much done because you don’t have to stop every fifteen minutes to do breathing exercises to keep yourself from blowing this entire compound up.
